SENATOR GREG BALL: NYC MAYOR HAS PUT A TARGET ON NYPD’S BACK

Brewster, N.Y. – 12/21/2014 – Senator Greg Ball (Patterson – R, C, I), Chairman of the Senate Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, issued the following statement regarding the assassination of NYPD officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the friends, families and all members of the New York City Police Department trying to keep their beloved city safe. Let me be blunt. Yesterday two members of the NYPD, serving in uniform to protect all of us, were executed in Brooklyn. As someone who is no longer constrained by political discourse let me be clear. In a matter of months this Mayor has taken the city back nearly 50 years. Today, our NYPD and other law enforcement and emergency responders have walking targets on their backs and are in grave danger. Mince no words. The Mayor is directly responsible for their safety or lack thereof. This Mayor brings all new meaning to ‘I didn't know you could stack shit that high’. Don't wait for him to act New York. Take peaceful and effective action now, and in the coming months, to hold him accountable. This man needs to go. Never forget,” said Senator Greg Ball.

STATEMENT FROM SENATOR DIANE SAVIINO

"Rest in Peace Police Officer Rafael Ramos and Police Officer Wenjian Liu. There are no words to explain the inexplicable, no words that will offer comfort to the young newlywed wife of Officer Liu or the wife and 13 year old son of Officer Ramos. There are no words to ease the fears of families of our city. Many words will be said over the days to follow this horrible tragedy, some wise and some less so. But, ultimately we must come together as New Yorkers, we must reject violence against our Police and all of our citizens. And in the season of giving, remember that two women are widows and this city owes them and their families financial security for the ultimate sacrifice . Perhaps this year, instead of spending on a gift, donate to the fund to help these families at www.answerthecall.org."

STATEMENT FROM NEW YORK STATE
ASSEMBLY MINORITY LEADER BRIAN M. KOLB

"Our collective prayers and condolences go out to the families of NYPD Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos. In the midst of such grief and loss, we remember these fallen officers as heroes who dedicated their lives to the most selfless and courageous profession.

This tragedy impacts us all. Police officers are the fabric of our communities. They exemplify bravery and sacrifice - men and women who put themselves in harm's way each day and who risk their own lives to protect ours.

In recent weeks many have called into question the performance and integrity of our police officers. It has been a disappointing and disrespectful dialogue. Police officers deserve nothing less than an unwavering commitment from leaders in communities they serve. The brave men and women who put on a badge each day and protect our families and neighborhoods will always have my steadfast support and profound gratitude for the work they do every day."

STATEMENT FROM INDEPENDENT DEMOCRATIC CONFERENCE LEADER STATE SENATOR JEFF KLEIN

"My deepest condolences, heartfelt sympathies and prayers go out to the families of Police Officers Rafeal Ramos and Wenjian Liu who were assassinated in a senseless and deplorable manner while on duty yesterday. We salute and honor the lives lost and the lives of all of New York's Finest during this tragic time. I remain committed to finding meaningful and serious solutions that will protect the uniformed police officers who serve this city with courage and bravery every single day."

Tedisco, Boyle, Golden and Malliotakis’s legislation, which is being drafted, would have the bullet proof glass installed in police cars over a phased-in period starting with the NYPD. The lawmakers are calling for part of the $5.1 billion state surplus to be used to pay for the statewide retrofit.

Yesterday, a gunman mercilessly assassinated NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu through the front passenger window of their patrol car as the police officers sat keeping watch over a neighborhood in Brooklyn.

“Our deepest condolences and thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of the two fallen NYPD officers who were murdered by a crazed thug. This incident is extremely disturbing and is an attack on all residents of New York State. These men were heroes trying to protect innocent, honest law abiding citizens and keep us all safe. As legislators, we have a responsibility to support, protect and defend the police officers who wear the blue uniform because blue lives matter,” said Tedisco.

“If it is good enough for high-ranking government officials and dignitaries to ride around in cars with bullet-proof glass, then it should be for our cops who put their lives on the line and are being tracked down and murdered like prey. We are proposing state legislation to begin to retrofit all law enforcement vehicles in New York State with the best protective bullet proof glass for all windows,” said Tedisco.

“We cannot put a price on protecting the men and women who put their lives on the line each and every day to protect us. When our police officers are safer, we are all safer,” said Boyle.

“We provide police offers with bullet proof vests to protect them when they are on the streets patrolling. We should give them equal protection when they are in their patrol cars. This bill accomplishes that goal,” said Golden, a retired NYC police officer.

“The murders of Officers Liu and Ramos is an absolute tragedy and we must do all we can to prevent another one from occurring. Bulletproof windows is one common sense and appropriate step in ensuring our police officers have the protection they need and deserve as they risk their lives to serve and protect our communities. In the future, bulletproof windows may prevent senseless assassinations of New York’s finest,” said Malliotakis.
